The animation film 58 Pages examines the relationship between abstraction and representation by looking at drawings published in an English daily newspaper. The succession of images can be traced, stroke by stroke and page by page, through their status as visual reportage. The layout of the respective pages is retained, with the drawings blending into each other. What remains recognisable? Visual information which has begun to build up on the film plane becomes blotted out: as soon as the images are complete they dissolve away once again. A pulsating temporal-visual structure arises, a layout on which pictorial information is allowed to develop – both as representation and as an accumulation of abstract lineaments.
