Post-Snowden Cooperation Events
One year ago, on June 5th, 2014, we commemorated 1-year of Snowden leaks and debates around the contemporary surveillance complex with 'The Magical Secrecy Tour' (see below). Two years on, the debate has not slowed down or lost it sense of urgency. In this context, transmediale is very proud to announce three cooperation events at the intersection of art, technology and politics that each in their own way address current, historical and imaginary surveillance cultures.

Berlin, the Cold War, and the Post-Snowden Era – Panel

Joint Panel with Paul Betts (St Antony’s College), Ian Brown (Oxford Internet Institute), Faisal Devji (St Antony’s College), Leslie Dunton-Downer (American Academy in Berlin), Kristoffer Gansing (transmediale, Berlin) and Timothy Garton Ash (St Antony’s College). On June 5th, 2014, one year after the initial publication of NSA disclosures by Edward Snowden, 'The Magical Secrecy Tour' made a day-long bus journey into past and present surveillance cultures of Berlin. transmediale invited hackers, technology-based artists, activists, former spies, whistleblowers, politicians, theorists, journalists, and others to explore Berlin, in the context of the Snowden revelations, as a unique capital of informed response to global mass surveillance.

On the current waves of surveillance, censorship, the erosion of civil rights and the need for political control of intelligence services.

How have these times of mass surveillance, data espionage and cooperation between the BND and NSA altered our established understanding of democracy? How was the NSA scandal perceived in the United States and in Germany and what can – and must – we learn from it?
The round of talks will be opened by the economist, peace activist and former military analyst Daniel Ellsberg of Pentagon Papers fame, and the former FBI agent Coleen Rowley, along with introductory remarks by the American journalist and Editorial board member of ExposeFacts.org, Norman Solomon.
The discussion will be moderated by Sarah Harrison, journalist and director of the Courage Foundation. A Q & A session is scheduled for after the panel discussion. During the exchange, the public is invited to take part in the discussion by sending in their questions or comments on Twitter using the hashtag #qvdemocracy.

On the occasion of Polymorphism #14, they created two limited edition long sleeve t-shirt designs in cooperation with independent journalist and internet activist Jacob Appelbaum and Holly Herndon – and supported by CTM and transmediale. The t-shirts will be available for sale at the event, all proceeds will be given to the Chelsea Manning Support Network.

Vor einem Jahr, am 5. Juni 2014, gedachten wir mit 'The Magical Secrecy Tour' dem Jahrestag der Snowden Enthüllungen und der Debatte über die gegenwärte Überwachungskultur (siehe unten). Zwei Jahre später ist die Diskussion noch immer im vollen Gange und hat an ihrer Aktualität nichts verloren. In diesem Zusammenhang freuen wir uns drei Kooperationveranstaltungen an der Schnittstelle zwischen Kunst, Technologie und Politik anzukündigen, welche alle auf ihre eigenen Art und Weise gegenwärtige, historische und imaginäre Überwachungskulturen thematisieren.

Juni 2014, ein Jahr nach der ersten NSA-Enthüllungen durch Edward Snowden, startete “The Magical Secrecy Tour” eine Busfahrt durch die Vergangenheit und Gegenwart der Überwachungskultur in Berlin. transmediale lud Hacker, Technik-versierte Künstler, Aktivisten, ehemalige Spione, Informanten, Whistleblower, Politiker, Journalisten und andere ein, um Berlin im Kontext der Snowden Enthüllungen als ein einzigartiges Zentrum zu entdecken, welches fundierte Antworten zur globalen Massenüberwachung gibt. Eröffnet wird die Diskussionsrunde von dem Ökonom, Friedensaktivist und ehemaligen Militäranalyst Daniel Ellsberg und der ehemaligen FBI-Agentin Coleen Rowley, sowie durch einführende Worte des amerikanischen Journalisten Norman Solomon.

Im Zentrum der nächsten Folge der Polymorphism-Reihe steht die amerikanische Laptopmusikerin Holly Herndon, die an diesem Abend ihr neues Album “Platform” vorstellen wird. Aus diesem Anlass haben Herndon, CTM und transmediale eine Reihe von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern eingeladen, die an dem Album mitgewirkt haben oder sich, wie Herndon, kritisch mit den Themen Überwachung, Neo-Feudalismus und Big Data befassen.

Anläßlich Polymorphism #14 gestaltet das Duo zwei limitierte T-Shirts-Editionen in Zusammenarbeit mit dem unabhängigen Journalisten und Internet-Aktivisten Jacob Appelbaum und Holly Herndon – unterstützt von CTM and transmediale.
Die T-Shirts sind vor Ort bei der Veranstaltung erhältlich. Der Gesamterlös aus den Verkäufen geht an das Chelsea Manning Support Network.
