Adelita Husni-Bey’s video installation The Reading / La Seduta resulted from a workshop held in New York with a group of young people. The workshop included discussions, writing and theater exercises. The ten participants, together with Tina Zavitsanos and the artist, engaged in an unscripted reading of a series of tarot cards based on questions of extraction, value, of what we owe each other and how we are implicated in land-use. These themes were elaborated through the course of research conducted on Standing Rock, the indigenous protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline, but also reflect on larger issues such as the permeability of borders, simulation, and the function of different perceptions of threat.
