Richard Barbrook
In 2007 Richard Barbrook published Imaginary Futures, a study of the political and ideological role of the prophecies of artificial intelligence and the information society that won the 2008 Marshall McLuhan Award for Outstanding Book of the Year in the Field of Media Ecology. Richard has also written a number of highly influential essays on the clash between commerce and cooperation within the Internet, including ‘The Hi-Tech Gift Economy’, ‘Cyber-communism’, ‘The Regulation of Liberty’, and, with Andy Cameron, ‘The Californian Ideology’, a critique of neoliberal politics that was published in Wired magazine. He recently also published the book The Class of the New (2006), a collection of quotations from authors announcing a new economic and social paradigm and shape of work to come. Richard Barbrook is currently Senior Lecturer of Politics at the University of Westminster.
