John & Jane is a mix of observational documentation and tropical science fiction. The film follows the lives of six 'Call Agents' in a call-centre in Bombay whose work consists of answering  American 1-800 calls. The employees work for one of the new `glass and steel` companies, which have been springing up like mushrooms in the swamp areas outside the town. The offices are only occupied at night, to receive the day calls of the American customers. When the employees answer the phone they hear the distant voices of Americans: a lonely woman from Wichita Falls who orders a 'miracle blade'; someone from Evanstone who wants to pay a credit card bill. When the night shift ends the workers go home and fall asleep in the tropical haze of Bombay. Because the calls are still resounding in their heads, they dream of distant places where the people own cake moulds with which snowman shaped dough can be made.
