Vorschau auf das Programm der transmediale 2012

Das Thema in/compatible widmet sich der künstlerischen Vorstellung der Netzwerkkultur, in der zwar alles miteinander verbunden ist, allerdings nicht immer unbedingt zusammenpasst und miteinander funktioniert.

Das zweitägige Symposium in/compatible: systems | publics | aesthetics umfasst interdisziplinäre Panels und künstlerische Interventionen zur Problematik und Produktionslogik des Inkompatiblen. Auf drei miteinander verzahnten Schienen werden politische, soziale und kulturelle Inkompatibilitäten aus Makro- und Mikroperspektive sowie aus künstlerischer Sicht beleuchtet. Die Moderatoren der jeweiligen Themenbereiche sind Chris Salter (ca), Krystian Woznicki (de) und Rosa Menkman (nl). Teilnehmer der Panels sind u.a. Stefan und Ralph Heidenreich (de), Tsila Hassine und Ziv Neeman (il), Orit Halpern (us) und Jussi Parikka (fi).

Die Sprecher der Keynotes sind Graham Harman (us), Jodi Dean (us) und Matthew Fuller (uk).

Die von Jacob Lillemose kuratierte Ausstellung Dark Drives: Uneasy Energies in Technological Times präsentiert Kunstwerke und Kulturprodukte, die auf die dunklen Seiten unseres technologisierten Lebens hinweisen. In bis zu 30 Positionen kommen Pioniere der Medienkunst, darunter Sture Johannesson (se), VNS Matrix (au) und Ant Farm (us) mit zeitgenössischen Ansätzen, wie zum Beispiel von Daniel García Andújar (es), Art 404 (us), JK Keller (us), Jon Satrom (us) und Jennifer Chan (ca) zusammen.

Anlässlich ihres 25. Geburtstages schaut die transmediale außerdem zurück auf die einzigartige Medienkunst- und Kulturgeschichte Berlins, die sich u.a. in dem von Marcel Schwierin kuratierten Videoprogramm Satellite Stories niederschlagen wird. Mit Filmbeiträgen von Andreas Schneider (de), Dominic Gagnon (ca), Isabelle Hayeur (ca), Basim Magdy (eg), Babak Afrassiabi & Nasrin Tabatabai (nl), Christiane Dellbrügge (us/de) und Ralf de Moll (de), Harun Farocki (de), Nina Kurtela (hr/de), Bjørn Melhus (no/de), Neozoon (de), Roee Rosen (il) und anderen. Gastkuratorinnen für das Arab Shorts Programm sind in diesem Jahr die Ägypterinnen Maha Maamoun und Sarah Rifky.

Das Performance Programm unter dem Titel The Ghosts in the Machine reflektiert das in/kompatible Verhältnis von analogen und digitalen Medien. Ein absolutes Highlight ist die Joshua Light Show (us) – ein psychedelischer Klassiker, der erstmals in Deutschland gezeigt wird, tritt an mehreren Abenden gemeinsam mit Gastmusikern auf. Außerdem gibt es Performances von Billy Roisz (at) und dieb13 (at), Mario de Vega (mx), Flora Könemann (de), Wolfgang Spahn (de) und Martin Howse (uk/de).

Mit der neu initiierten Plattform reSource for transmedial culture werden wir in Workshops, Diskussionen und performativen Vorträgen gemeinsam mit Künstlern, Hackern und Wissenschaftlern in die Zukunft der (trans-)lokalen Netzwerkkultur blicken. Teilnehmer sind u.a. Jacob Appelbaum (us), Jaromil (it/nl), Steve Lambert (us), Telekommunisten (de), Morten Riis (dk), Johannes P. Osterhoff (de), Katrien Jacobs (be/hk), Sergio Messina (it), Prayas Abhinav (in) und Shu Lea Cheang (tw/fr).

Während des Festivals wird ein Tag der Weiterführung jener Gedanken und Diskussionen gewidmet sein, die während des in/compatible research Workshops und der Konferenz entwickelt wurden. Ein Dankeschön geht an dieser Stelle an unsere Kooperationspartner, der Aarhus Universität in Dänemark und dem Vilém Flusser Archiv der UdK, sowie an alle Teilnehmer. PhD Studenten und Theoretiker kamen für drei Tage zu einem regen Austausch über in/kompatible Methoden, Interfaces und Ökonomien zusammen. Die Inhalte werden derzeit auf einem Blog zur Konferenz weitergeführt, um letztendlich im Sinne eines peer-to-peer Revisionsprozesses in einer thematischen Publikation der transmediale zu münden.

Preview of transmediale 2012

The theme in/compatible probes the artistic imagination that is developed in a network culture where everything seems to connect, but not all fits in or works together.

The 2-day symposium in/compatible: systems | publics | aesthetics comprises interdisciplinary panels and artistic interventions. They address the in/compatible thematic according to three interrelated streams, discussing political, social and cultural incompatibilities from macro, micro and artistic points of view. Each stream is hosted by a chair: Chris Salter (ca), Krystian Woznicki (de) and Rosa Menkman (nl). Some of the speakers participating in the symposium are Stefan and Ralph Heidenreich (de), Tsila Hassine and Ziv Neeman (il), Orit Halpern (us) and Jussi Parikka (fi).

Keynotes will be given by Graham Harman (us), Jodi Dean (us) and Matthew Fuller (uk).

The exhibition curated by Jacob Lillemose called Dark Drives: Uneasy Energies in Technological Times contains artworks and cultural products that portend to the dark sides of our technologised lives. Over 30 artistic positions include pioneers of media art, such as Sture Johannesson (se), VNS Matrix (au) and Ant Farm (us) as well as contemporary approaches by Daniel García Andújar (es), Art 404 (us), JK Keller (us), Jon Satrom (us), Jennifer Chan (ca) and others.

For its 25th anniversary transmediale is looking back at a unique history of media art and culture in Berlin. This history is playing a part in the video programme Satellite Stories curated by Marcel Schwierin. It includes works by Andreas Schneider (de), Dominic Gagnon (ca), Isabelle Hayeur (ca), Basim Magdy (eg), Babak Afrassiabi and Nasrin Tabatabai (nl), Christiane Dellbrügge (us/de) and Ralf de Moll (de), Harun Farocki (de), Nina Kurtela (hr/de), Bjørn Melhus (no/de), Neozoon (de), Roee Rosen (il) and more. The guest curators for the Arab Shorts programme this year are Maha Maamoun and Sarah Rifky from Egypt.

The performance programme The Ghosts in the Machine explores the analogue as the ghost which keeps haunting our digital culture. An absolute highlight is the Joshua Light Show (us) – a German premiere of these resurrected psychedelic visual pioneers who will appear on stage together with different musical guests. Further shows include Billy Roisz (at) and dieb13 (at), Mario de Vega (mx), Flora Könemann (de), Wolfgang Spahn (de) and Martin Howse (uk/de).

The newly initiated platform reSource for transmedial culture will anticipate projects for a future (trans-)local network culture by bringing together hackers, artists and scientists in workshops, discussions and performative lectures. Participants among others are Jacob Appelbaum (us), Jaromil (it/nl), Steve Lambert (us), Telekommunisten (de), Morten Riis (dk), Johannes P. reSource beta: in/compatible research recap

During transmediale 2012 the first day of the reSource for transmedial culture programme will be dedicated to the presentation and continuation of the thoughts and discussions that were generated during the in/compatible research workshop and conference. We would like to thank the Aarhus University in Denmark and the Vilém Flusser Archive at the UdK for their cooperative efforts as well as all participants and attendants. For three days PhD students and theorists came together for a brisk exchange on the in/compatibilities of research methods, interfaces and markets. Contents are currently developed further on the conference blog activating a peer-to-peer editorial process that will ultimately lead to a thematic publication by transmediale.
