Together with Stephen Kovats (CA), media researcher, and Miro A. Cimerman (HR), software designer, we will discuss historic examples in which Digital Media was asked to be part of social (ex)change.
Digital Art has gained popularity in the last 10-15 years in the digitalized everyday life of our societies. It's commonly expected that a young generation of computer artists is finally using the computer for creating unbounded aesthetic objects and new ways of thinking thus using the potentials of new media to full capacity. But: Consistently our visitors are surprised to learn e.g. that virtual realities have been created already in the 1970ies and astonishing pattern and random experiments were done starting from the 1960ies. So that the digital hype in the contemporary aesthetics of communication and design as well as in a growing art market has to put its relevance for art history and it's reference to present-day problems into question.
 
Miro. A. Cimerman (*1945 Zagreb, Croatia) started his scientific career as research worker in the Laboratory for Cybernetics at „Ruđer Bošković“ National Reserach Institute Zagreb in 1968. Cimerman had his initial contact with digital art through the  international art movement “[New] Tendencies” in 1968/1969. Since 1971 he is member of the „bcd cybernetic art team“ founded by Vladimir Bonačić (†), Miro A. Cimerman, and Dunja Donassy as spin-off from [New] Tendencies. During the 80ies he settled to Germany working as electronics and computer expert. Cimerman is currently an independent consultant for “SynergEthics” (Synergy & Ethics Consulting).
 
Media researcher Stephen Kovats (CA) is founder of r0g - an agency for open systems, cultural hacktivism and critical transformation. Previously he was artistic director of transmediale, co-director of the McLuhan in Europe 2011 Network and program curator at V2_Institute Rotterdam. In post-unification Germany he directed the 'ostranenie' media art forums focussing on the dynamic relationships between political and electronic space and on the transformation of societal landscapes in Eastern Europe. Kovats is recently working on #OSJUBA an initiative which tries to mobilise free culture, accessible technologies and hacktivist communities in creating a vision for the new capital of South Sudan.
 
film: bcd, nove tendencije - new tendencies - neuen tendenzen, zagreb 1961-1973.
The bcd cybernetic art team initiated the project “Action for the Promotion of [New] Tendencies” after the opening of the exhibition „bit international – [Nove] tendencije – Computer und visuelle Forschung, Zagreb, 1961-1973“ at Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM), Karlsruhe in 2008/2009. As part of this action, a unique documentary film on the [New] Tendencies exhibition and movement is currently in the editing process in Zagreb. It has been produced in a common effort of Croatian Radio and Television, ZKM, MSU, bcd cybernetic art team, and a number of other European supporters.
