1) transmediale Archiv-Projekt

Die transmediale ist Teil eines Projektantrages zur Digitalisierung zeitgenössischer Kunst im Rahmen der europäischen Datenbank Europeana (DCA). Dank dieser Unterstützung werden wir in den kommenden zweieinhalb Jahren in der Lage sein, bisher kaum zugängliches Archivmaterial aus den vergangenen Jahrzehnten des Festivals erstmals wieder einer breiten Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen. Mit Blick auf das 25-jährige Jubiläum der transmediale im kommenden Jahr, arbeiten wir derzeit an einem kuratierten Projekt, um in einer ersten Version ausgewählte Dokumente und Arbeiten während des Festivals transmediale.12 zu präsentieren und online bereitzustellen.

2) Ankündigung: McLuhan Konferenz und Gala Wochenende

RE-TOUCHING McLUHAN - THE MEDIUM IS THE MASSAGE: Berlin Konferenz und McLuhan in Europe-Wochenende im Rahmen des 100-jährigen McLuhan-Jubiläums vom 27. bis 29. Mai 2011

transmediale präsentiert in Zusammenarbeit mit der kanadischen Botschaft in Berlin und dem Marshall McLuhan Salon ein Veranstaltungswochenende, das das Erbe des berühmten kanadischen Medientheoretiker Marshall McLuhan anlässlich des 100. Jahrestages seiner Geburt feiert. Als Teil des McLuhan in Europe 2011-Netzwerks, das von der transmediale initiiert wurde, findet vom 27. bis 29. Mai 2011 in Berlin RE-TOUCHING McLUHAN - The Medium is the Massage-Konferenz und Gala Wochenende statt. Die Veranstaltungen finden in der kanadischen Botschaft und zahlreichen anderen Partnerorten in Berlin statt.

Die Konferenz wird von Dieter Daniels kuratiert. Zu den international führenden Medienkunst-Experten und Wissenschaftlern gehören u.a. Richard Cavell, Martina Leeker, Claus Pias, Katja Kwastek, Dieter Daniels, Liz Kotz, Janine Marchessault, Graham Larkin und Lorenz Engell.

In McLuhan vs McLuhan werden Derrick de Kerckhove und Steffi Winkler seltenes Archivmaterial bearbeiten. Dies ist die erste Veranstaltung in der Reihe McLuminations Illuminated Screenings, produziert von Baruch Gottlieb.

Daneben finden zahlreiche Performances, Talks und Konferenzen statt, etwa die zweite German-Canadian Professionals Conference (GCPC) The Global Village: Calamity or Chance? und die Europapremiere von David Rokeby's und Lewis Kayesuch's Arbeit Through the Vanishing Point. Zudem wird der Künstler, Theoretiker und DJ Paul Miller aka DJ Spooky eine Neuaufnahme von seltenem Audiomaterial aus The Medium is the Massage aus dem Jahr 1969 präsentieren.

„Paul Vanouse. Fingerprints… Index – Abdruck – Spur“

Die Publikation zur Ausstellung „Fingerprints…“ von Paul Vanouse ist Auftakt einer Schriftenreihe der Schering Stiftung zu ausgewählten Ausstellungen und Projekten an der Schnittstelle von Kunst und Wissenschaft. Der vom Kurator der Ausstellung, Jens Hauser, herausgegebene Band enthält spielerische Elemente, die Vanouses prozesshafte Biomedien-Kunst konzeptuell in die Buchform überführen. In vier theoretischen Essays reflektieren der Kriminologe Simon A. Cole, der Wissenschaftshistoriker Hans-Jörg Rheinberger, der Kurator Jens Hause und der Künstler selbst die Genomik-kritschen Installationen in „Fingerprints...“ und betrachten sie aus ästhetischen, politischen und technikphilosophischen Blickwinkeln.

Das Buch „Paul Vanouse. Fingerprints… Index – Abdruck – Spur“ erscheint im Berliner Verlag argobooks als Band 1 der Publikationsreihe der Schering Stiftung und kostet 16,00 € (ISBN: 978-3-942700-17-7).

Die Biomedien-Installationen von Paul Vanouse hinterfragen die Codes und Bilder der heutigen Molekularbiologie. Mit der Gelelektrophorese als Medium seiner Kunst zweckentfremdet er wissenschaftliche Bildgebungstechniken und deckt deren Rolle in der Wissensproduktion auf. Wie entstehen unkritisch hingenommene Begriffe wie „genetischer Fingerabdruck“? Wie blenden derartige Metaphern die technische Konstruiertheit ihrer vermeintlichen Natürlichkeit aus? Zunehmend werden aus ontologisierten Körperfragmenten wie Genen gesellschaftlich zweifelhafte Schlussfolgerungen gezogen, die Klischees und Vorurteile zementieren.

Im Anschluss an die Buchpräsentation haben Sie die Gelegenheit, die Ausstellung „Fingerprints…“ (verlängert bis 16. April 2011) zu besichtigen.

Reynold Reynolds hat sein ganzes Studio ins HKW verlegt und produziert dort sein neues Werk live vor Publikum. Während der Ausstellung werden der Aufbau des Settings und der Dreh zu Film-Performances in einer gerade entstehenden Studio-Situation. Indem der Zuschauer den Aufbau des Bildes beobachtet, wird die filmische Illusion zerstört und die Aufnahme als künstlerischer Prozess enthüllt.

Das Publikum ist eigeladen Teil des Filmsets zu werden. Um Teil des Cabaret Publikums zu werden, bringt bitte Kleidung im Stil der 30er Jahre mit. Oder schaut einfach aus nächster Nähe bei der Entstehung des Films zu.

1) transmediale Archive Project

transmediale is part of a larger EU-project for the digitization contemporary art (DCA) for the Europeana database. Thanks to this support, we will be able to recondition until now hardly accessible archive material from past decades of the festival to a broad public. With the 25th anniversary of the transmediale festival coming up in 2012, we've launched a curated project in order to present a first version of selected documents and archive footage during the festival tm.12

RE-TOUCHING McLUHAN - THE MEDIUM IS THE MASSAGE: Berlin Conference and McLuhan in Europe 2011 Centennial Weekend May 27 – 29, 2011

transmediale, in collaboration with the Embassy of Canada Berlin and the Marshall McLuhan Salon are presenting a key weekend event celebrating the legacy of Canadian media philosopher Marshall McLuhan on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth. Part of the McLuhan in Europe 2011 network of events initiated by transmediale, Berlin’s RE-TOUCHING McLUHAN - The Medium is the Massage Conference and Gala Weekend will take place May 27 - 29 at the Embassy of Canada and partner locations in Berlin.

The conference, curated by Dieter Daniels, will feature lectures by leading international media art and digital culture researchers including Richard Cavell, Martina Leeker, Claus Pias, Katja Kwastek, Dieter Daniels, Liz Kotz, Janine Marchessault, Graham Larkin and Lorenz Engell.

Legendary McLuhanist Derrick de Kerckhove and local McLuhan scholar Steffi Winkler elaborate on rare material from the McLuhan archive in McLuhan vs McLuhan, the first session in the McLuminations Illuminated Screenings series, produced by Baruch Gottlieb.

The 2nd German-Canadian Professionals Conference (GCPC) The Global Village: Calamity or Chance?, artworks such as the European première of Through the Vanishing Point by David Rokeby and Lewis Kaye and performances by artists including Paul Miller aka DJ Spooky, who will be launching his digitally re-mastered album of the rare 1969 McLuhan audio recording of The Medium is the Massage, will all highlight this special centennial RE-TOUCHING McLUHAN weekend.

The publication accompanying the exhibition „Fingerprints…“ by Paul Vanouse is the first volume of the Ernst Schering Foundation’s Publication Series dedicated to selected exhibitions and projects at the interface of art and science. The volume, edited by the exhibition’s curator Jens Hauser, contains playful elements, which conceptually mirror Paul Vanouse’s process-intensive biomedia art. In four theoretical essays, criminologist Simon A. Cole, science historian Hans-Jörg Rheinberger, curator Jens Hauser and the artist himself reflect upon the criticism of genomics inherent in the installations of “Fingerprints…” from an aesthetic, political and techno-philosophical angle.

The book „Paul Vanouse. Fingerprints… Index – Imprint – Trace“ is published with argobooks and can be purchased for 16,00 € (ISBN: 978-3-942700-17-7).

The biomedia installations of Paul Vanouse challenge the codes and images of contemporary molecular biology. Employing gel electrophoresis as an artistic medium, he diverts scientific imaging techniques from their intended uses and uncovers their influence on knowledge production. How are uncritically accepted catchwords like “genetic fingerprint” generated? How do such metaphors conceal the technical constructedness of their alleged naturalness? Today, increasingly questionable social conclusions are derived from ontologized body fragments, such as genes so as to reinforce clichés and prejudices.

Following the book presentation, you will have the opportunity to visit the exhibition „Fingerprints…“ (extended until April 16, 2011).

Film and video artist Reynold Reynolds has moved his entire studio into the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, producing his new film-work live to an audience. During the rest of Labor Berlin 4 the activity of setting up and shooting 'THE LOST' becomes a performance within an evolving set as installation. The live construction of the image destroys the illusion of film, revealing the whole studio process as art.

The public is welcome to watch the process of filming from the sidelines, or become part of the set of 'THE LOST' and join the filming of a 1930's cabaret. Bring vintage clothes if you can and take a seat in Reynold Reynolds newest work.
