The transmediale 2k+12 identity was designed by Manuel Bürger, Timm Häneke and Till Wiedeck. The design was inspired by the in/compatible theme with the working title Promised Land, primarily reflecting the high expectations of everyday digital technologies. The festival architecture of transmediale 2012 in the foyer of Haus der Kulturen der Welt was conceptualized by raumlaborberlin. The architectural installation comprises elements which, as an ensemble, are reminiscent of domestic living situations.
One can experience a further uneasy aspect of transmediale here on our website by unintentionally activating an intervention called HOTGLUE. It was conceived by Danja Vasiliev together with Gottfried Haider essentially as a Content Manipulation System. For this special transmediale version Matthijs van Henten was also brought in. What HOTGLUE actually is and how it messes with our website, is explained by Danja Vasiliev personally in one of transmediale's in/compatible sound clips.
Incompatibility is the condition that arises when things are not working together. Given the current worldwide crises, be they political, financial, technological or environmental, it may seem as if incompatible elements are everywhere. Ironically, it is the supposedly ever-more compatible media-scape that renders such crises visible. Where do incompatibilities arise and how are they integrated in a world-order predicated on convergence, but also leading to divergence? | Read the full curatorial statement.
transmediale 2012 is an in/compatible being. Incompatibility is the condition that arises when things are not working together. With transmediale 2012, we are investigating the productive and destructive sides of incompatibility as a fundamental condition for cultural production in times of crisis. In this context transmediale 2012 calls for a transversal approach. With our theme in/compatible we are acknowledging that there is equally the need for creative hacks and modifications, as there is a need for a refusal of the quick re-integration into business as usual.
